    Senior Utilities Organizer Job Description

    Ohio Consumers Power Alliance

    Background

    Ohio Consumers Power Alliance (OCPA), a project of Ohio Citizen Action Education Fund, seeks a Senior Utilities Organizer to plan and execute the organization’s participation and leadership within Ohio efforts to advocate for residential electric and gas customers. This position will have a particular focus on Cleveland Public Power, the FirstEnergy companies and the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) customers, with the goal of adopting 100% clean energy aggregation contracts for residents of those municipalities. Within the Power A Clean Future Ohio (PCFO) coalition effort, the organizer will represent the OCPA and strategize for greater efficacy.

    OCPA is a sister organization to Ohio Citizen Action, the premier grassroots mobilizing and organizing team in the Midwest. Ohio Citizen Action organizes and mobilizes people to advocate for public interests. In person, by phone, and online, we engage people in actions that protect public health, improve environmental quality, and benefit consumers.

    Responsibilities/Scope of Work

    Lead OCPA’s utility efforts within the Power A Clean Future Ohio Community Choice Aggregation campaign for 100% clean power;

    Target local governments with a focus on communities that already have or pass an aggregation program;

    Coordinate internal campaign efforts with OCA’s Campaigns Organizer;

    Assist the communications team in creating content and highlighting victories for the campaign’s social media accounts;

    Provide weekly updates on the campaign’s progress as a part of direct report to the Sr. Advisor/Organizing Director;

    Organize and maintain regular contact with relevant working committees within the coalition and participate in calls and meetings as needed;

    Assist in the development of campaign strategies and tactics with the appropriate coalition partners as needed;

    Ensure that the campaign plans and goals are executed and achieved in a timely manner;

    Together with the Executive Director, develop monthly work plans reflecting timelines and tasks for each component of the campaign;

    Testify before local government bodies and communicate technical details and relevant resources related to community choice aggregation to government officials and other policymakers;

    Together with the Development team, produce updates and reports for funders as needed;

    Conduct work in a manner that consistently aligns with OCA’s core values; and

    Other tasks and duties as assigned by the Sr. Advisor/Organizing Director or the Executive Director.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree

    Three years’ experience in political campaign work (candidate or issue advocacy)

    Track record of successful campaign work, ideally with a focus on advocacy efforts to educate the public, policymakers, elected officials and/or government agencies

    Experience with canvassing, digital organizing and other direct public and voter engagement work

    Experience recruiting, training and motivating volunteers

    Experience with grasstops-level organizing preferred

    Organizing experience in Northeast Ohio strongly preferred

    An exceptional writer, including experience writing across platforms and for diverse audiences.

    Experience working within a high functioning, multi-tiered coalition.

    Able to work remotely or within the Cleveland, Ohio office.

    Very strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    Good time management and problem solving skills.

    The Senior Utilities Organizer position is a full-time, salaried position with benefits including vacation, paid sick days, healthcare, dental and vision. Starting range in the low $40s, depending upon experience.
