Minnesota-based Xcel Energy is receiving national press as a result of its decision to voluntarily shut down two coal-fired plants in Colorado. It’s the first time a U.S. utility has ever taken this kind of a measure. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission approved the decision and is allowing Xcel to build a 200-megawatt solar plant and increase its wind energy system by 850 megawatts.
