We Energies on Thursday asked state regulators to raise electric rates by $79 million because of surges in the price of natural gas used in its power plants and other fuel cost increases.
If approved, the increase would add $2.24 to the monthly bill of a residential customer now paying nearly $86 a month. Rates for large industrial customers would rise by 3.6% on average, said utility spokesman Brian Manthey.
We Energies is seeking to increase rates as the price of natural gas has soared by 30% since mid-December. The state's largest utility is scheduled to open its second new natural-gas-fired power plant in Port Washington this year.
