When Frank Hurtte heads to his Republican gathering place to caucus Thursday, the environment will be much on his mind.

On the GOP stance on allowing oil and natural gas drilling on protected arctic lands, Hurtte intends to recommend that it be allowed only if adequate technology is available to do it safely and only if potential drillers are sufficiently insured against any problems or disasters, he said.

“I have a marked up copy of the Republican platform on environmental issues, and I will be recommending a number of changes,” said Hurtte, a board member for Plains Justice, an environmental law center.
