ST. PAUL — Xcel Energy has filed plans to reduce mercury emissions at two coal-fired plants in Minnesota.
Under the proposal, Xcel would install equipment to scrub as much as 90 percent of the mercury from the smokestacks of the Allen S. King plant in Oak Park Heights and Sherburne County (Sherco) Generating Plant’s Unit 3 in Becker.
Xcel proposes controlling mercury emissions by installing a system that injects a fine powder into the ductwork of the plants’ air-quality control equipment. Mercury would collect on the surface of the powder, which then would be captured.
