LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan is uniquely positioned to turn parts of its ailing automotive sector into a manufacturing center for alternative energy equipment, whether it's wind turbines, solar cells or waste recycling, Gov. Jennifer Granholm says.

"We've got the capacity, we've got the resources and we've got the know-how at the universities," she told The Associated Press. "There's no reason why we can't have this be a significant sector and a significant piece of diversifying the economy."

Granholm has held a series of roundtables with businesses interested in getting on the alternative energy bandwagon, and has been encouraged by the response.
