Fargo’s landfill leads the state in using renewable energy thanks to a methane-burning generator, solar panels and a small wind turbine that run its operations, government officials say.

The city saves about $300,000 a year because of the energy collected by those three operations that are power sources for the facility at 4501 7th Ave. N.

A $1.5 million generator uses methane from decomposing garbage to produce electricity. Because the generator produces twice the electricity the facility needs, the city can sell the rest and reduce the need for higher garbage rates, said Bruce Grubb, the city’s enterprise director.
