Concerns about the role of greenhouse gases in causing global climate change could earn the city of Fargo some extra cash.
Maybe lots of extra cash: The city could be eligible for $267,000 a year in credits traded on the Chicago Climate Exchange, according to a preliminary estimate, and another one-time $515,000 in “historic” credits for energy-conservation steps taken during the past five years or more.
A proposal at City Hall, expected to be discussed Monday by the Fargo City Commission, seeks approval to hire a certified reviewer to calculate the city’s “carbon footprint” by inventorying emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
An audit by a certified inspector would enable the city to qualify to sell credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange, where companies with high greenhouse emissions can buy credits to offset their pollution from organizations that have taken steps to reduce greenhouse gases.
