HELENA, Mont. - Rate increases sought by NorthWestern Energy would increase the average Montana homeowner's bill by $55 a year for electricity and $52 for natural gas - a 6.6 percent increase for electricity customers and a 3.9 percent increase for natural gas customers, the utility says.

NorthWestern filed a request Tuesday with Montana's Public Service Commission for a $42 million annual rate increase on electric and natural gas customers. It was NorthWestern's first request in seven years to raise prices for delivering energy to customers.

A similar increase proposal was made to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission and the Nebraska Public Service Commission. NorthWestern hasn't requested a natural gas increase in South Dakota since 1999.
