The wind power boosting American Superconductor is reaching gale force.

Less than five years after entering the wind power business, a series of wind power orders from across the globe helped the company's Middleton-based Power Systems unit turn an operating profit for the first time in fiscal 2006, which ended March 31 of this year.

And the company forecast continued profits and strong growth for the unit, with revenues projected to grow from about $25 million in fiscal 2006 to at least $55 million in fiscal 2007, which ends next March 31.

But that projection was blown away by a $70 million order announced today for wind turbine electrical systems from China-based Sinovel Wind Corp. The deal  greatly expands the companies' existing relationship.
