The question that's up for debate is not whether or not global warming is happening, but whether we will begin to do something about it now or mutely accept the changes accelerating around us.

Like any major challenge, evolving beyond our fossil-fuel-driven economy and reducing our carbon dioxide emissions will require many strategies. In light of the likely impacts of global warming -- estimated to be a 5 to 20 percent loss in global GDP -- such a shift is not a threat to the health of our economy but a great step toward sustainability. One strategy that we must pursue aggressively is quite simple and intrinsically cost effective.

We can use a lot less energy.
